Book Reviews by MaryBeth Buffington
Books were given in exchange for an honest review as part of the blog tour!
And Something Blue by Paige Timothy is book 1 in the Main Street Merchant series. The book is a 100 page novella that I found fun to read. It had a little bit of a Pride and Prejudice feel to it. It was somewhat predictable, but I enjoy a good light predictable book every now and again especially when there is chemistry between the main characters. The book follows Laurie, a bridal shop employee, who someday hopes to own her own bridal shop. She finds herself in a love/hate fascination with one of her bride’s brothers. He shares this fascination and they find themselves being drawn to each other.
I don’t want to give too much of the book away, but I found that the pace of this book was a little off. The first 2/3 of the book read like a full-length novel and then suddenly went into full speed and wrapped up very quickly. I didn’t like that. I was enjoying the book and probably could have read a full-length novel about Laurie and Logan, I was disappointed when it pretty much wrapped up when they finally started to date and acknowledge their feelings for each other. So it made the end not so sweet and enjoyable, because you didn’t feel as invested in the characters. Since this was a novella, I feel that if the author hadn’t spent so much time on side stories I think she could have developed their relationship more and made for a more “Ohhhh” at the end. But that being said I still enjoyed it and like I said before actually would have liked to have had a longer story.
So did it meet my qualifications for a good read? It was clean! There was pretty good chemistry between the characters. The dialogue felt a bit contrived at times, but there were some fun witty exchanges. And I really enjoyed the characters. When the roommates were introduced I hoped that they were going to be more a part of the series (which they are).
I really liked this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I really wish that this book did not overlap the same timing as book 1. It made me wish I hadn’t read the first book first because it gave things away with this book and so I didn’t care as much or get excited about scenes that she was trying to develop. I felt it was a waste of pages to repeat scenes from book one almost word for word, especially since it was a novella. When I was reading I was almost wishing that she had combined book 1 and 2 and made it into a full-length book or two. I know novellas are supposed to be quick and short and sweet, but I guess I liked the characters so much I didn’t want them to be in novella format.
That being said I really liked Morgan and Rory. I’m glad that there was drama and growth with the characters, but the drama wasn’t drawn out. I enjoyed the side characters and hope that they are in future books in this series.
This book contained all the elements I like in a romance, but because it bothered me that there were two repeated scenes from the first book I can’t say that I love it.
So I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars.

I actually liked this story better than the first book. I don’t know if it was because most of the characters had already been introduced in the first one or the compelling scenario of not being defined by your past or your limitations. That you can overcome so much if you work hard and have a desire for you. Also that beauty and love are more than skin deep.
The flow and pace of the book were good and I found myself flipping pages not wanting to put it down. I look forward to more from this author.
I give this book 5 out of 5.
