When I began reading this book I was struck by Houck’s ability to describe a world while keeping the book very active, I feel like I could go to all the places Lily went and feel like I have been there before, but I also never felt like it was forced. It was the perfect balance, which was not easy when she needed to explain all about Egyptian mythology along the way. There was also a good balance with character development and plot. As each new character is introduced time is taken to get to know the individuals even as the story continues to increase in pace.
Through the book I really liked how vulnerable the characters were. Having the characters get injured, or become weak, incapacitated, or stumped made it easier for me to relate to them. It wasn’t always easy to connect with a super wealthy girl from NYC and a super hot Egyptian prince, but having them have some weaknesses, limitations and character flaws helped to bridge that gap. It also makes an adventure more real when an author is willing to put a character in harm’s way.
Before reading this book I didn’t know much about Egyptian mythology. I’m not sure that I know much now, but I do know more than when I started. It was fun to see some history and mythology come to life with a modern twist, especially through the reawakened characters.
As the story continues there are plot twists, sacrifices, relationships, and character growth that kept me turning the pages. When I reached the end of the book it was a solid ending, but left me anticipating the next installment. It was a very satisfying, unexpected, emotional, and fun book easily five stars!
