The book reminded me of Graceling, with a misunderstood and mistreated heroine, Akara, who seeks to understand who she is while the world is falling apart. She can wield the magic that the world needs, but with all she has been through she struggles to find a reason to save those who have hurt her. Rydan, on the other hand, has an optimistic outlook on life and tries to help Akara see that the world is worth saving.
The magic wielding pair adventure through Casden seeking parts of a fractured stone so they can learn about their past, and keep the earth from tearing itself apart.
Creating and describing an entire world is never easy, but Lynn does a superb job showing the different parts of Casden through the eyes of Akara and Rydan. I loved the vivid action sequences that seem to come almost non-stop, and the mix of a budding romance, all presented in a way that is good for all ages.
Very excited for the sequel.
